ABSTRACT:

SHARCNET stands for Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network. Formally established in 2001, SHARCNET is the largest High Performance Computing consortium in Canada, including 17 universities, colleges and research institutes across southwestern, central and northern Ontario. The SHARCNET high performance clusters are installed at a number of the member institutions in the consortium. The advantage of using SHARCNET is that it can greatly reduce the time required to run a program. For example, if a program takes months to run on PC, it could probably take only a few hours to run in SHARCNET using hundreds of processors on the SHARCNET clusters provided the program is inherently parallelizable. This talk will cover the following questions: what is SHARCNET?(an overview of available SHARCNET systems, available software and support.),how do we use SHARCNET? (basic usage information including job submissions/management, queueing policies)and what can we do with SHARCNET? (research related case studies).
